D-Flex December Wrap-up

Barring a few technical difficulties this December D-Flex meeting was an excellent culmination of the first year of D-Flex. In this meeting we covered the PureMVC framework as we get closer to our group’s first application D-Flix, a Flex based Netflix application, along with meeting planning for our next year.

PureMVC

Paul Taylor presented at this month’s D-Flex meeting showing how to set up a Flex Application using the PureMVC framework. Though this framework can be daunting to new users, Paul used some simple charts and graphs to explain how the PureMVC works. Below are some links to the resources Flex brought to D-Flex.

Future Meeting Planning

As a group we discussed some of the points that we would like to hit as a group over the year. Some of the key points include:

  • 15 min Flex “Tips and Tricks” section to start each meeting.
  • More meetings held throughout the month via Adobe Connect

On top of that, we quickly brainstormed some of the main points we would like to hear about at D-Flex. The topics include:

For the next few months we will work hard to cover each of the requested topics. See you next year D-Flex’ers!

Jon, thanks for linking to me. I’d like to suggest another topic for a 15 minute Flex tutorial: ant scripts, automated builds, and ASUnit. I think these could be useful for developers of all levels. Great post man, keep it up.

BTW I forgot to mention. I’ve uploaded the video player to my site here: http://guyinthechair.com/wp-content/flex/puremvc_video_player/ExamplePureMVCVideoPlayer.html and the presentation here: http://guyinthechair.com/wp-content/flex/puremvc_presentation/PureMVC%20Presentation.html

Thanks again Jon.

That is a good idea! Ant scripts, automated builds, asdoc, asunit (though I think it would be interesting to look over some of the different unit testing softwares). You are right though, we will knock them out.

I’m not sure if anyone else would be interested in this topic but one of the things I’m lacking in experience is how to add tasteful pizzazz to a Flex app, what are (somewhat subjective) examples of good ways others have implemented it. Also when can you use the existing effects and just modify the mxml code and when should you create your own component/AS.
