Flex Mobile In Action

Flex Mobile In Action Cover Image I know that my blog posts have gone to almost zero for the last few months, but there is a really good reason for that… I wrote a book! Almost 400 pages in all, this book focuses on using Flex to build mobile application for Android, iOS, and QNX platforms using Adobe Air.

Flex Mobile in Action teaches you to use the powerful Flex Platform to create applications that can stretch across Apple iOS, Android, and BlackBerry devices. It focuses on practical application development techniques such as accessing native device capabilities, choosing the right architectural patterns, building data access models, and more. For developers new to Flex, the book provides a quick overview that will get you started in no time.

I am quickly wrapping up this book with final versions going out soon, now is a great time to get into mobile with Flex and AIR. Making one application that targets multiple platforms has never been easier. Go ahead and get your copy now.

Hi,
Well done on the book I look forward to reading it, one question I do have is about the popularity of flex mobile. Is there a market and do clients want flex mobile apps, is it good to go cross platform with flex or native. Jobs seem to be for native not many want flex, what’s your thoughts on this?

@stephen Maybe because it is my expertise (I doubt that though) but I’ve seen a huge interest in Flex Mobile. Many customers are confused about the whole Flash and iPhone thing but once beyond that they are super excited about the ability to reliably create a product that works cross platform and is fast to develop. Many customers are frustrated by the continuing struggles of working with HTML5 and the inability to go cross platform with native.

Feel free to respond.

Hi Jon, I hope you are right. I do think that Flex mobile is a great option for cross platform mobile apps, but concerned that it’s just Flex developers who believe that.

hi, just bought meap, looks great, I’m posting from native WebsiteView…
I do believe Flex has several years before becoming obsolete, HTML5 mobile dev doesn’t look mature enough as it involves too many languages and framework without strong consistency as in flex. FalconJS compiler project, producing html/css/js from mxml/as (from what I understand) could also be of great value for flex successful. PhoneGap acquired by Adobe mixed with flex would be great too…
cheers

Jon please tell me what is future of flex after incubating to Apache.

@rizwan The future is in our hands in a way that it never was before, that should make you very happy. If you’ve been watching the mailing lists there are many very involved people working to get through incubation and on to being a full project. Beyond that mobile is a target that many developers are very focused on and Adobe has committed to keeping AIR for devices for years to come. With all of these decisions and announcements I see Flex Mobile development as still a very bright future.

Hi Jon,

Looking forward to your book being released. Any idea on an exact release date? Although I have used Flex for several years, I just started developing Mobile Apps in FB 4.6 and actually can’t believe how relatively easy it is. I am surprised that it’s not getting more love on the Internets. I hope it’s not a sign of things to come as I think it could really have a bright future.

hi..can you please explain what is the future of flex mobile apps?now the market is moving to html5..and there no supports from Adobe also, for mobile develoeper..can you please explain me..is there any great things happen from falcon compiler, can we get any new features from flex 4.8?

jonbcamposDecember 5th, 2012 at 10:27 am

@ madhusudan With everything going to Apache you can see that there are many people still working on Flex and mobile is a big deal to everyone. As a mobile dev I can tell you that Flex is still highly requested by clients as the easiest way to build an enterprise application for many mobile devices in one go. Yes there are always draw backs but the positives outweigh the negatives. The one draw back to Flex has always been that it worked best for enterprise and internal projects. As such it rarely gets the big public praise that other platforms get.

Yes, Jon I agree with Stephen I wish you are perfect. I do think that Flex mobile is a great option for cross platform mobile apps, but concerned that it’s just Flex developers who believe that.
