What have I been up to?

This blog has been neglected for a LONG time. First it was because I was spending time writing a book. Then it was because I spent too much time with too many clients building too many apps. Then it was because I spent just the right amount of time learning (a lot) of new stuff.

As I’m wanting to get back into my blogging I’m using this as my kickoff. If I have some time I’ll update the look, but for now it will have to stay the same.

So what have I been up to?

1. Flex/Air Mobile Development

Clients love the Air Platform. Being able to make one app that runs on a variety of devices just blows their mind. And Apache Flex still knocks out the job best for fast customizable development. I’ve put out around a dozen apps on various platforms – some public many private.

2. Android Development

Many of my clients are using the Android Platform. In over a year I haven’t even heard the iOS platform been requested. Well that isn’t 100% true – when doing AIR development they like having the ability to output to iOS. Android just works in so many places and with some of the newest Jelly Bean developments clients are just tickled “jelly bean” pink to have apps on Android.

I’ve said it before that the Google Glass Project may be a success or may be a total failure but I have a bunch of clients that have a variety of plans for those little toys. They are all waiting for the hardware to become available.  As such I’ve been brushing up on my Java flavored Android.

3. New Developments in HTML5 Development

I used to be waist deep in HTML/JS development back in the day. Then Flex came and made life fun. With everything changing the way it is I’ve had to keep up with what is going on though so far most of my clients prefer to have Native or AIR applications over HTML development. As important as the new changes in HTML are they currently don’t meet the same level of Native or AIR applications – though Phonegap (one of the things I’m playing with) helps.

4. Feathers/AIR Development

I’ve been having fun with FeathersUI recently and need to share some of the application designs I’ve been using successfully for quite a while. FeathersUI is similar enough to Flex with a high speed turbo boost thanks to it running on Stage3D.

What’s Next?

For now this is the plan. Keep moving forward at moving forward. Lots of development to do and as a developer I pick up whatever is necessary. This year I’m looking forward to enjoying playing with new technology and new ways to interact with data. I’m getting bored with the screen and keyboard along with mobile phones.

I’d love to know more of your thoughts on FeathersUI. I was really excited to see something like this come out. Have you created any themes? Is it easy to extend? How’s the documentation?

@Dom I’ve really enjoyed feathersui. There are a few places that things are a bit difficult and you have to do theming their way or it just won’t work. I know that sounds obvious but as a dev when you are kicking the tires you try to see what you can bend and what breaks… Do things their way or it breaks.

I’ve adjusted Omar’s Robotlegs implementation and now have a very easy way to port flex mobile projects to feathers based projects. This was requested once and a fairly easy task. The only thing I had to do was write the view layer (less than a big deal), rehook up my mediators, and copy the rpc.swc from flex. To me that is minor to keep the rest of the app the same and run on the GPU.
